Vols4STEM works in partnership with the STEM Academy of Knoxville to fill teacher’s requests for classroom speakers, advisors on curriculum, competitive team mentors and more.
Vols4STEM is a resource of the Innovation Valley area intended to facilitate the voluntary collaboration of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professional community, STEM employers, STEM educators and other stakeholders. Vols4STEM was conceived as a means to improve K-12 STEM education and workforce development, primarily by getting more STEM professionals engaged, as volunteers, in STEM outreach activities to area youth. Vols4STEM connects volunteers with educators and students to work on classroom activities and STEM clubs together, and provide much needed resources, supplies, and expertise to area classrooms. We have pulled together STEM societies, businesses and Chambers, educators, and individuals to achieve this and amplify our own individual efforts.
On September 23rd Vols4STEM held a luncheon that was sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Knoxville Chapter, Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers and the Knoxville Chamber. The luncheon was attended by educators who have volunteered to be School Liaison’s for their individual schools and STEM Professional Points of Contact for Vols4STEM. The attendees spend an hour and a half formulating plans for collaboration throughout the school year, learning from each other how to plug in the volunteers where needed and how best to facilitate communication of needs to the STEM professional community. All attendees reported that the time spent was informative and felt it set the tone for future expansion of the Vols4STEM objectives. Plans are being discussed to hold a similar event at the end of the year to celebrate successes and formulate a plan for the 2012/2013 school year.
