Energy Secretary Rick Perry is being considered to lead the Department of Homeland Security by President Trump after former Marine Gen. John Kelly left the job to become his chief of staff, sources told Bloomberg News on Wednesday.
President Trump named Kelly as his chief of staff on Friday, and is considering other individuals to fill the vacant Cabinet position as well.
“Secretary Perry is focused on the important mission of the Department of Energy,” Robert Haus, director of public affairs at the Department of Energy, said to Bloomberg. “He’s honored to be mentioned, but he loves what he’s doing.”
The Department of Energy released a similar statement in a tweet on Wednesday, saying, “While @SecretaryPerry is honored to be mentioned, he is happy where he is and focused on carrying out mission POTUS gave him to lead @ENERGY.”
