Ted Sherry to Join ORNL Global Security Directorate

Sherry’s initial focus will be on broadening the engagement of the national security community in ORNL’s new Advanced Manufacturing Initiative.

oakridgeI am pleased to announce that Ted Sherry will join the Global Security Directorate (GSD) as Director of Advanced Programs on February 6, 2012. As most of you know, Ted recently retired from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), stepping down from the position of NNSA’s site manager for the Y-12 National Security Complex. He received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from West Virginia University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland. Ted will draw on his extensive background in national security to focus initially on broadening the engagement of the national security community in ORNL’s new Advanced Manufacturing Initiative. Please join me in welcoming Ted to ORNL.

Ted joins a select group of recent strategic hires and proven ORNL leaders in national and global security:

• Dr. Nick Prins is Director of Homeland Protection Programs, replacing Jim White, who retired last summer. Nick brings 26 years of experience with the Department of Defense, including a 4 year detail to the Department of Homeland Security, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office. Nick received his BS in Physics from Hope College in Holland, MI; his MS in Physics from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA; and his PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton, OH.

• MG (RET) Richard Webber is Director of Cyberspace Operations. He recently retired from the U. S. Air Force, where he was the Commander, 24th Air Force (the new Air Force cyber command). Dick is a graduate of the U. S. Air Force Academy and has a MBA from the University of Missouri.

• BG (RET) Robert Carr is Director of National Intelligence. Rob recently retired from the U.S. Army, last serving as Director for Operations, Defense Intelligence Agency. He received his B.A. from Stetson University, a MPA in Comptrollership from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a MSST in Strategy from the U.S. Army War College.

• CAPT (RET) Tom Kollie is Director of Select International Security Programs. Tom recently retired from the U.S. Navy, where he last served as the Deputy Director for Global Operations, J-39, Joint Staff. He received his B.S. from the University of Tennessee, a Master’s in Administration from Central Michigan University, and a M.S. (Distinguished Graduate) in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces with a concentration in Information Operations.

• Dr. Jeffrey O. Johnson is Director of Nuclear Threat Initiative and Programs. Jeff has a BS, MS, and PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. He brings 33 years of experience at ORNL in radiation transport modeling, simulation, and code development across a broad spectrum of R&D areas associated with nuclear engineering and physics.

These new thrust/initiative leaders join GSD’s established team of Program Office Directors: LTG (RET) George Fisher, DoD Programs; Larry Satkowiak, NN Programs; and MG (RET) John Doesburg, International Security and Analysis Programs. They will focus their capabilities and expertise on organizing and leading initiatives that cross-cut the entire Laboratory.
