The Department of Energy 2021 Secretary’s Honor Awards recognized a significant number of NNSA employees for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to nuclear security. Of the 1,100 DOE employees recognized, the recipients included two individuals and 522 team members from NNSA. The awards formally recognize the outstanding achievements of those who have gone above and beyond in fulfilling DOE’s mission and serving the Nation.
This month, NNSA held its first-ever virtual ceremony to recognize the recipients. “Congratulations to the two individuals and 522 team members from NNSA who were awarded a Secretary’s Honor Award for their significant contributions to DOE and our Nation in 2021,” said NNSA Administrator Hruby. “I am awed by your collective accomplishments across the Nuclear Security Enterprise and grateful for your dedication to our vital mission.”
The awards include two separate honors: the Excellence Award for individuals and the Achievement Award for groups. Two NNSA employees received the Excellence Award. Danny E. Field, Senior Industrial Hygienist in the Office of Safety, Infrastructure and Operations and John Lastowski, Deputy Director, Senior Technical Advisor, Advanced Design Programs, Naval Reactors. Mr. Field was recognized for his superb leadership demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic and Mr. Lastowski was recognized for overseeing critical components of the COLUMBIA Class submarine program.

In 2021, NNSA continued to fulfill its critical missions despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The teams and individuals recognized with these awards went above and beyond by demonstrating great knowledge and ability and exhibiting an exceptional commitment to service.
