ETEC member UniTech Services Group has announced the launch of new decommissioning support services to current and future nuclear reactor decommissioning sites in the United States. These new services will leverage the capabilities of UniTech’s Oak Ridge Service Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

This formal announcement comes after UniTech was awarded a Basic Ordering Agreement by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management in January. The B.O.A. enables UniTech to conduct nationwide low-level and mixed low-level waste receiving, handling, and treatment services at Environmental Management cleanup sites.

UniTech plans to serve decommissioning project team needs that are currently underserved:

  • Cost-saving and waste-reducing waste management
  • Leasing of respiratory protection equipment (decreasing project capital expenses)
  • Seamless delivery and management of PPE and safety equipment inventory

On Dec. 3, UniTech Services Group was awarded a Basic Ordering Agreement (B.O.A.) by the U.S. Department of Energy (D.O.E.) Office of Environmental Management. The B.O.A. enables UniTech to conduct nationwide low-level and mixed low-level waste receiving, handling, and treatment services at Environment Management cleanup sites.

Following the announcement of the B.O.A., UniTech has officially launched decommissioning support services to current and future nuclear reactor decommissioning sites in the U.S.

“We’re proud to be a green, clean, sustainable strategic partner to the U.S. nuclear industry at large, and this new agreement enables us to bring a ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ approach to decommissioning projects through our materials processing and waste management expertise,” said UniTech Services Group Director of Sales & Marketing Gregg Johnstone.

Waste received by UniTech will be processed at the company’s Oak Ridge Service Center (ORSC) in Oak Ridge, Tenn. UniTech acquired the ORSC in 2016 from Babcock Services, Inc. and launched its materials processing and waste management services. Through these services, UniTech now decontaminates, reuses, and/or recycles 5 million lbs. of customer materials each year. The ORSC currently saves existing UniTech customers over $3.5 million per year in waste management costs, leveraging licensed Bulk Survey for Release (BSFR) processing at reduced rates.

Johnstone explained that by combining waste management, leasing of respiratory equipment, and seamless delivery and management of all protective clothing and safety equipment needed at a decommissioning site, UniTech is now well-positioned to partner with decommissioning project managers to significantly improve the financial, carbon footprint, efficiency, and worker safety outcomes of each of the decommissioning project.

“These needs aren’t currently being met in decommissioning projects, and they can now be met by proven UniTech services that are already trusted by active nuclear plants around the country,” said Johnstone.

UniTech operates regional plants across the United States, with proximity to existing and future U.S. decommissioning sites. In addition to the ORSC, UniTech has another facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn., plus facilities in Springfield, Mass.; Royersford, Pa.; Santa Fe, N.M.; Barnwell, S.C.; Morris, Ill.; Ontario, Calif.; and Richland, Wash.

Regional facilities receive materials and then ship materials for materials processing and waste management at the ORSC as appropriate.
