A grave stone station "Gone to rest" sits in the cemeteryLegends and stories of the paranormal run as deep as Oak Ridge’s roots.

Before the federal government turned the 59,000-acre swath of land into the so-called Secret City, several small communities were living there: Elza, Robertsville, Wheat and Scarbrough.

And somewhere in the surrounding woods was John Hendrix. According to Oak Ridge historian Ray Smith, Hendrix was born in 1865. His youngest daughter died around 1900 and his wife left him soon after.

The plight set him on course to become a figure of local lore.
