Kelly Beierschmitt will hold the newly created position of associate lab director for nuclear science and engineering.
Kelly Beierschmitt will hold the newly created position of associate lab director for nuclear science and engineering, as the nuclear programs gain a higher profile within the management structure at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
ORNL Director Thom Mason announced Beierschmitt’s promotion, effective Oct. 1, and other organizational changes in a memo to staff.
“ORNL has been a leader in nuclear sciences and technologies since its earliest days. The desire to lower America’s level of carbon emissions has brought about a renewed emphasis on, and investment in, nuclear energy by DOE,” Mason wrote in memo. “We are responding by consolidating our nuclear capabilities into a single Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate to be led by Kelly Beierschmitt. Kelly will be responsible for the Nuclear Technology Programs at ORNL and will be the principal interface to the Office of Nuclear Energy. The new directorate will consist of the Research Reactors, Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities, Nuclear Science and Technology, and Global Nuclear Security Technology divisions.”
