New steps are going forward with a proposed training center for local, state and federal emergency responders.

The facility would be on vacant land along Oak Ridge Turnpike, currently owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and located across from Horizon Center. Specifically, it will be designed for fire training with simulated materials, along with other classroom, augmented reality and field exercises.

Roane County Industrial Development Board will own the land rather than DOE, meaning Oak Ridge City Council will need to rezone it from federal land to industrial land.

All of this information, and a map is available in the Thursday, Nov. 19, agenda for Planning Commission on the city of Oak Ridge website.

Planning Commission approved a motion to recommend the change at its meeting, along with a map and artist renderings of the new facility.
