Article from June 15, 2020:

East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Announces New President and CEO

Following a comprehensive national search, the Board of Directors of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital announced that Matthew Schaefer has been named president and CEO of the hospital.  Schaefer succeeds retiring president and CEO Keith Goodwin.

A native of Texas, Schaefer is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Children’s Hospital New Orleans, Louisiana’s only freestanding academic medical center. While there, he led a $300 million expansion project, reorganized the Heart Center, and created the highest employee engagement scores in the hospital’s history.

Schaefer also brings business experience and strategic planning skills to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital as a result of having served as a consultant to Fortune 100 companies while at McKinsey & Company in Houston.  A graduate of Texas A&M with a degree in biomedical engineering, he began his career in Boston with MIDI Technology Corporation, before returning to Houston and receiving his Master of Business Administration degree at Rice University.

“I am confident that Matt is the right person to continue our growth and our history of excellence at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital,” said Larry Martin, Chair of the hospital’s Board of Directors, “We are pleased that Matt and his family will be making Knoxville their home, and we are excited about his commitment to serving the children of our region.  I also appreciate the extraordinary leadership and unwavering commitment of Keith Goodwin and wish him all the best as he retires.”

Schaefer will assume leadership of East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in August of 2020.
