DOE Office of Nuclear Energy Public Meeting
April 11, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 5:30 pm
The public meetings are being scheduled by DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy to gather input on the process they should follow for consent based siting of facilities need for future handling, transporting and storing nuclear materials. NE is inviting broad participation and wants to make sure they’re including relevant state, local and regional economic development offices and organizations.
Our goal is to develop solutions for the long-term, sustainable management of our nation’s spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. We are planning for an integrated waste management system to transport, store, and dispose of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste from commercial electricity generation, as well national defense activities. To achieve this goal, we are developing a process to site facilities collaboratively with the public, communities, stakeholders, and governments at the state, tribal, and local levels. We are seeking the help of all Americans in developing a consent-based approach to siting that is fair and reflective of public input. We are committed to finding a solution that protects our nation’s citizens, communities, and the environment.
JOIN THE CONVERSATION
To launch the consent-based siting effort, we issued an Invitation for Public Comment in the Federal Register soliciting input on important considerations in designing a fair and effective process for siting. To provide us with your input, please respond to the Invitation for Public Comment in the Federal Register or email us at email@example.com.
We welcome all comments on the following questions:
- How can the Department ensure that the process for selecting a site is fair?
- What models and experience should the Department use in designing the process?
- Who should be involved in the process for selecting a site, and what is their role?
- What information and resources do you think would facilitate your participation?
- What else should be considered?
We also welcome your input at one of our eight public meetings around the country. The purpose of these meetings is to hear from the public, communities, states, Tribal Nations, and all interested stakeholders on what matters to you as we move forward in developing a consent-based process.
Our first public meeting will be held in Chicago, Illinois on March 29th at the University of Chicago Conference Center.
Our second public meeting will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on April 11th at the Georgia Institute of Technology Conference Center. Please register here to attend the Atlanta meeting in person or view the event online. To see a draft agenda, please click here.
We will be hosting six additional public meetings through the month of July. The remaining six meetings will be held in Boise, Idaho; Boston, Massachusetts; Denver, Colorado; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Sacramento, California; and Tempe, Arizona. Please check back soon for additional information on these six meetings. We look forward to your participation!
