Analytical chemists at DOE's ORNL have developed a rapid way to measure isotopic ratios of uranium and plutonium collected on environmental swipes, which could help International Atomic Energy Agency analysts detect the presence of undeclared nuclear activities or material.

OREM Prepares for Removal of Final Hot Cell at Former Lab
Crews are getting ready to deactivate the final hot cell of the former Radioisotope Development Laboratory at ORNL in advance of demolishing the structure. “Removing the remnants of the former Radioisotope Isotope Laboratory has been a priority for several years,” ORNL Portfolio Federal Project Director Nathan Felosi said.

Oak Ridge Students' Satellite Now in Orbit
The Robertsville Middle School cube-shaped satellite — dubbed RamSat for the school’s mascot was Launched June 3 from the NASA Kennedy Space Center as part of SpaceX Commercial Resupply Service to the International Space Station, RamSat was deployed into low earth orbit on June 14 and is currently traveling at 17,000 miles per hour.

Gilbertson Retires from DOE after 25 years, Mullis to serve as acting APDAS
Mark Gilbertson is set to retire from federal service at the end of October. Gilbertson mostly recently served as the associate principal deputy assistant secretary (APDAS) for regulatory and policy affairs. Jay Mullis has been selected to serve as the acting APDAS for regulatory and policy affairs starting November 1.

ORNL Fission and Fusion Featured in Discovery Series
Tomorrow's World Today is an Emmy-nominated program on Discovery focusing on innovation and paths to sustainable living. The ORNL content will air in part 4 of the program called "The Clean Factor", where in part one of this four-part series, they explore discover how Nuclear Energy is helping us reach our goal of a zero-carbon footprint by 2050.
