This year's workshop focused on supply opportunities for advanced nuclear reactors, nuclear fuels, additive manufacturing for nuclear, and nuclear medicine. Knowledgebase is Power for Nuclear Reactor Developers

Six new nuclear reactor technologies are set to deploy for commercial use between 2030 and 2040. Called Generation IV nuclear reactors, they will operate with improved performance at dramatically higher temperatures than today’s reactors. Weiju Ren of DOE's ORNL manages an operation by which global participants share R&D for structural materials to be used in a Gen-IV reactor called the Very High Temperature Reactor with graphite moderators and a once-through uranium fuel cycle. RenDOE’s Gen IV Materials Handbook, a project managing more than $180 million worth of structural materials information for the VHTR.

TedxOakRidge-Telling the Story of Progress in the Secret City

The inaugural “TEDxOakRidge” event will take place at Ts117 Modern Co-Working on Sept. 10. Daniel Hodge, a local entrepreneur who recently co-launched SeatsOpen, is the force behind bringing the idea to the region. “TEDx” sessions are organized independently under a free license granted by the TED organization which says they bring “the spirit of TED’s mission of ideas worth spreading to local communities around the globe. ETEC's past chairman, Tom Ballard, will be speaking about the “Entrepreneurial Nature and Impact of Oak Ridge.” The two other speakers will address nuclear fusion/energy and closed loop agricultural systems.

Former ORNL Leader Alan Liby Appointed as New JIAM Director

Alan Liby, a past chairman of ETEC and the former director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Advanced Manufacturing Program, has been appointed director of the University of Tennessee’s Joint Institute for Advanced Materials (JIAM). Located at UT’s Research Park at Cherokee Farm, JIAM is a partnership between UT and ORNL. UT and ORNL established JIAM in 2005 as a way of bringing together material scientists to do groundbreaking work. Advancements in physics, computer science, building, and energy collection and storage have all benefited from the work done at JIAM.

UT's Baker Center Fall Events and Lectures

The Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy is a nonpartisan public policy center, located on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville has planned their lecture series for the Fall. The Center aims to provide policy makers, citizens, scholars, and students with the information and skills necessary to work effectively within our political system and to serve our local, state, national, and global communities.

DOE EM’s Ike White Recognizes Small Businesses

Ike White recently recognized award-winning small businesses helping complete projects on schedule and advance the cleanup mission during his first visit to Oak Ridge in his role as head of EM. His visit began at the seventh annual Small Business Awards Breakfast hosted by DOE OREM's cleanup contractor UCOR. After the awards ceremony, White met local federal and contractor leadership guiding Oak Ridge’s cleanup, and he toured projects across the site.

BTP Services, LLC Awarded $49.5M Contract

BTP Services, LLC (a Boston Government Services, LLC joint venture with Trinity Engineering Associates, Inc.) was awarded a 5-year Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite-Quantity contract with DOE's Office of EM for consolidated technical support services throughout the entire EM complex. They will provide the EM program offices with comprehensive technical support and subject matter expertise for field operations, regulatory and policy affairs, and corporate services.
