AI Approach Points to Bright Future for Fusion Energy

For decades, scientists have sought to control nuclear fusion—the energy that powers the sun and other stars—by developing massive fusion reactors to produce and contain plasma, with the goal of mirroring the astronomically high pressure and temperature conditions of celestial objects. A team of researchers from DOE’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory recently tested its Fusion Recurrent Neural Network code on various HPC systems, including Titan and Summit at ORNL.

Crews Mobilize to Build Mercury Treatment Facility at Y-12

Oak Ridge Site crews began constructing the Outfall 200 Mercury Treatment Facility, vital infrastructure to fulfill EM’s regulatory commitments to reduce mercury levels in the East Fork Poplar Creek and begin large-scale cleanup and demolition at the Y-12 National Security Complex. The Mercury Treatment Facility will be comprised of two components at two locations — a headworks facility and a treatment plant connected by a pipeline nearly a mile long.

Y-12 Supporting Work to Make Most Widely Used Medical Isotope

The Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge is supporting a program to make an isotope used in more than 40,000 medical procedures across the nation each day. The goal is to produce the isotope, molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), in the United States without using highly enriched uranium. Some of that work could occur in Oak Ridge. Some Y-12 researchers have extensive knowledge of Mo-99 and are sharing that information with Coquí and other companies hoping to produce the isotope.

Founder of Mouse House, Geneticist Liane Russell Dies

Liane Russell, whose work helped identify the deleterious effects of prenatal radiation exposure and the chromosomal basis of sex in mice, died recently at age 95. Russell spent much of her career at ORNL, having first joined the institution in 1947. There, she and her husband William Russell established the Mouse House, an extensive colony of mutant mice bred to model the effects of radiation exposure. Their research continues to shape medical protocols around the use of X-rays and other diagnostic radiation during pregnancy.
