Nuclear Suppliers Workshop

Join us for the 3rd annual Nuclear Suppliers Workshop on Tuesday, August 27th at Y-12's New Hope Center. This one day event is focused on manufacturing opportunities around small modular reactors, next generation nuclear technology, nuclear medicine, and national security programs. There will be a reception held the evening prior as part of the event.

ETEC Awards: Call for Nominations
ETEC is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Muddy Boot Award and Postma Young Professional Medal. Submissions should include a letter to the selection committee containing specific reasons for the nomination along with the nominee’s resume and bio. Detailed criteria can be found on the ETEC website. Nominations will be accepted through August 16, 2019, and may be submitted online, by email, or through the mail.

‘I’m being deleted from Wikipedia, which feels like I’m famous,’ Sarah Tuttle tweeted in early May. The astrophysicist’s Wikipedia page was flagged for deletion just weeks after a fierce – and prominent – battle over the page of superheavy element chemist Clarice Phelps.

VA Contends that it Now has the World’s Largest Biobank
The richness of the data being gleaned from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs’ Million Veteran Program is enabling researchers to begin to shed light on the genetics of a range of medical conditions. “Eight years after it began, it is the largest mega-biobank in the world,” said Carolyn Clancy, MD, with the Veterans Health Administration.

Demolition Reduces Risk at ORNL Building
EM workers have torn down the west end of Building 3017 at ORNL after more than a decade of challenges, evaluations, and repairs to the structure. The building was used for office space by Isotek, the EM Oak Ridge Office of EM contractor responsible for processing and disposing of the site’s inventory of uranium-233.

Arizona Fire Highlights Challenges for Energy Storage
Arizona’s largest electric company installed massive batteries near neighborhoods with a large number of solar panels, hoping to capture some of the energy from the afternoon sun to use after dark. Arizona Public Service has been an early adopter of battery storage technology seen as critical for the wider deployment of renewable energy and for a more resilient power grid.

ORISE Employee Inducted into UT Educator’s Hall of Honor
Layman, associate director of workforce development for the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education at Oak Ridge Associated Universities, was among six new members added to the Hall of Honor by UT’s College of Education, Health, and Human Services during ceremonies at the Holiday Inn-World’s Fair Park in Knoxville.
