ETEC Awards: Call for Nominations

ETEC is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Muddy Boot Award and Postma Young Professional Medal. Submissions should include a letter to the selection committee containing specific reasons for the nomination along with the nominee’s resume and bio. Detailed criteria can be found on the ETEC website. Nominations will be accepted through August 16, 2019, and may be submitted online, by email, or through the mail.

Senate Confirms Baranwal to Serve in DOE Nuclear Leadership Role

The Senate confirmed Rita Baranwal as assistant secretary of energy for nuclear energy, after Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) released her hold on Energy Department nominees over federal plutonium shipments to her state. Baranwal has directed the Energy Department’s Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative since mid-August 2016.

US NRC Finds No Safety Concerns Related to Clinch River SMRs

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has found no safety concerns that would prevent the issue of an early site permit to TVA for the potential use of a site at Clinch River for two or more small modular reactors (SMRs). The site hosted the former Clinch River Breeder Reactor Project. NRC’s 600-page final safety evaluation reviewed site seismology, geology, hydrology and accident risks, among other things.

Y-12 Prime to Contract for Up to Four Uranium-Melting Furnaces

The prime contractor for the NNSAs main uranium enrichment site intends to award a contract in 2020 for up to four furnaces that help reclaim excess uranium metal left over from defense missions. The award will be for at least one and possibly two pairs of direct chip melt bottom load furnaces in Building 9215 at the Y-12 Nuclear Security Complex.

LATA-Atkins Awarded DOE WM Services Contract at Y-12

LATA-Atkins Technical Services, LLC, a joint venture between Los Alamos Technical Associates, Inc. and Atkins Nuclear Secured Holdings Corporation, has been awarded the Waste Management Services subcontract for DOE's Y-12 National Security Complex under the DOE’s prime contract with Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC.
