ETEC After Hours: Summer Mixer

Mark your calendars for the upcoming After Hours event on Wednesday, July 10th, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Country Club. Since it is summer this will be a different, more casual event. We will be mixing with the Young Professionals of Anderson County. This free event will feature networking, a cash bar, and snacks.

ETEC Awards: Call for Nominations

ETEC is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Muddy Boot Award and Postma Young Professional Medal. Submissions should include a letter to the selection committee containing specific reasons for the nomination along with the nominee’s resume and bio. Detailed criteria can be found on the ETEC website. Nominations will be accepted through August 16, 2019, and may be submitted online, by email, or through the mail.

ORNL Welcomes Third Cohort of Innovation Crossroads

ORNL welcomed seven technology innovators to join the third cohort of Innovation Crossroads, the Southeast’s only entrepreneurial research and development program based at a DOE national laboratory. TVA joined Innovation Crossroads as a program sponsor enabling a record number of innovators focused on energy-related and grid topics. Innovation Crossroads is also sponsored by DOE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office.

Tom Rogers Outlines Vision, Ideas for the UT Research Park at Cherokee Farm

Tom Rogers has a two-fold vision for the University of Tennessee’s Research Park at Cherokee Farm. “We are in the business of making curated collisions occur,” Rogers explains. Those clearly lead to success on both aspects of his vision for the park – serving as a gateway for collaborations between the private sector and UT and making sure that “this incredible piece of property meets its full potential as a community asset.”

Someday the U.S. Will Have to Actually Deal With Its Nuclear Waste Problem

The Department of Energy announced Wednesday that they are reclassifying the definition of “high-level,” or highly radioactive, waste stored in underground tanks at Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state, the Savannah River Plant in South Carolina, and the Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls. The DOE hopes that the redefinition will expedite cleanup of the waste.

ORISE Beryllium Lab Recertified for 6th Consecutive Time in 10 Years

The College of American Pathologists, has accredited the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Energy beryllium laboratory in Oak Ridge for the sixth time since the laboratory’s first accreditation in 2009. The laboratory is one of only three labs nationwide that performs the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test. This test determines if a patient has developed a sensitization to beryllium, which could evolve into chronic beryllium disease.

New DOE Program Connects Fusion Companies with National Labs, Taps ORNL to Lead

DOE has established the Innovation Network for Fusion Energy program, or INFUSE, to encourage private-public research partnerships for overcoming challenges in fusion energy development. The program, sponsored by the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences within DOE’s Office of Science, focuses on accelerating fusion energy development through research collaborations between industry and DOE’s national laboratory complex.
