ORHS Graduate Returns, Offers Insights on AI
Nearly 40 years to the day since he graduated from Oak Ridge High School, renowned artificial intelligence (AI) pioneer Kai-Fu Lee returned to the city to share his insights.The event, hosted by the Oak Ridge Public Schools Foundation, nearly filled the Pollard Auditorium at Oak Ridge Associated Universities. During the presentation, Lee used a mix of great insights, knowledge and humor to captivate the crowd in terms of the impact that AI will have on their lives.

Highly Enriched Uranium from UK Brought to Y-12 for Secure Storage
Almost 700 kilograms of highly enriched uranium has been moved from the United Kingdom to the United States, and the material is being securely stored at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge for now, federal officials said. The National Nuclear Security Administration said the highly enriched uranium, or HEU, will be down-blended later into low enriched uranium for use as nuclear reactor fuel.

DOE Ramps Up Oak Ridge Procurement Website
The Energy Department, possibly inching toward a draft solicitation, has posted a slew of documents related to the contract for environmental remediation at the Oak Ridge Reservation in Tennessee. The more than 50 documents encompass the labor pact in place for current cleanup contractor, UCOR, and its unionized workers, legal agreements, site maps, and DOE’s strategic plans for mercury remediation at the Y-12 National Security Complex.

UT/Oak Ridge Establishes First Nuclear Cleanup Minor Degree in U.S.
UCOR, EM’s Oak Ridge cleanup contractor, is playing a pivotal role in the first nuclear decommissioning and environmental management minor degree at a university or college in the U.S. The University of Tennessee program, which had its first graduates last year, is designed for the next generation of employees in the nuclear field interested in pursuing careers in EM’s cleanup mission and other nuclear related areas, such as work addressing aging reactors and nuclear facilities around the world.

State Increases Funding for SBIR/STTR Matching Grants
There’s great news for those Tennessee-based start-ups that advance their company through grants under the federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. Based on the recommendation of Governor Bill Lee and action by the General Assembly before it adjourned earlier this month, the state funds available to match the federal grant dollars have been significantly increased, rising to $3 million at the start of the 2019-20 fiscal year.

OREM Awards New Contract to Support Cleanup
DOE's OREM announced five small business awardees for its Characterization, Deactivation/Demolition, and Remediation Services contract.Through this arrangement, each company has a five-year Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity (IDIQ) contract where OREM can issue Firm-Fixed-Price task orders. The maximum value for services is $24.9 million. The five awardees include: Aerostar SES, LLC, ARS Aleut Remediation, LLC, CTI and Associates, Inc., GEM Technologies, Inc., and Terranear PMC, LLC.
