DOE, Cray to Deliver Record-Setting Frontier Supercomputer at ORNL

DOE announced a contract with Cray Inc. to build the Frontier supercomputer at ORNL, which is anticipated to debut in 2021 as the world’s most powerful computer with a performance of greater than 1.5 exaflops. Frontier will accelerate innovation in science and technology and maintain U.S. leadership in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. The total contract award is valued at more than $600 million for the system and technology development.

New Research Facility will Serve ORNL’s Growing Mission in Computing, Materials R&D

Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Congressman Chuck Fleischmann and lab officials broke ground on a multipurpose research facility that will provide state-of-the-art laboratory space for expanding scientific activities at DOE's ORNL. The new Translational Research Capability, or TRC, will be purpose-built for world-leading research in computing and materials science and will serve to advance the science and engineering of quantum information.

Donde Plowman

Donde Plowman Appointed UTK's Ninth Chancellor

Donde Plowman was appointed the ninth chancellor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville by UT’s Board of Trustees. She will assume leadership of the state’s flagship university on July 1. Plowman currently serves as executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. In that role, she oversees academic affairs, student affairs, the Office of Research Economic Development, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

NNSA's Strategic Vision Documents

The NNSA recently released its Strategic Vision, Governance & Management (G&M) Framework, and Strategic Integrated Roadmap to guide efforts across the nuclear security enterprise. NNSA is busier than it has been since the end of the Cold War, and these three documents will ensure that the enterprise of over 40,000 employees has a common vision and an integrated approach to strengthening the Nation’s nuclear security.

Bipartisan Senate Coalition-Comprehensive Nuclear Waste Legislation

U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., reintroduced bipartisan legislation to safeguard and permanently dispose of the nation’s stockpiles of spent nuclear fuel from sites across the country.S. 1234, the Nuclear Waste Administration Act (NWAA) of 2019, will provide a path forward for nuclear energy in America by addressing the longstanding failure to implement an effective plan for the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle.

New Video Tours of Manhattan Project National Historical Park Sites

The American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE) is proud to host the premiere of the guided video tour of the historic calutron buildings 9731 and 9204 (Beta 3). Although neither facility is available for public tours, the inclusion and preservation of Building 9731 and Beta 3 as a part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park is an assurance that this valuable legacy will be preserved for generations to come.
