FY20 Budget Request: DOE Office of Science
The president’s fiscal year 2020 budget request calls for a $1 billion, 16 percent cut to the DOE Office of Science, which would erase much of the budget increase Congress has provided it over the last two budget cycles. Beneath its toplines, the request also proposes small amounts to begin planning on a variety of new experiments and facilities.

Safety Training Prepares New Generation of Workers
OREM, UCOR, and the United Steelworkers Local 9-288 have partnered for the last three years to cultivate a new generation of environmental cleanup workers by providing free training to east Tennessee high schools. This year, UCOR and USW supplemented that training with a new course.

Manhattan Project Photogrpaher Westcott Dies at 97
James Edward “Ed” Westcott, Oak Ridge’s official photographer during the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, died on Friday, March 29, 2019, at the age of 97. The famed photographer’s death came on the day an exhibit of his photos titled “Her Story: A Photography Exhibition of Women in the Secret City” opened at the new Oak Ridge History Museum

DARPA Modernizes Small Business Innovation Research Program
SBIR/STTRs are the principal set-aside programs for small business participation in federal research and development funding. To keep pace with discovery in science and technology worldwide, DARPA intends to release opportunities on an out-of-cycle basis, separate from the three pre-determined announcements traditionally issued directly through DoD.

Conference: Systems and Complexity Sciences for Health
The ETEC Big Data Analytics Working Group is promoting the upcoming 4th International Conference for Systems and Complexity Sciences for Health: Networks for Local and Global Health Improvement. On Friday morning, April 5 the working group is co-sponsoring a session on how big data is transforming health care organized by Dr. Bruce Ramshaw to explore our regional assets, opportunities, and challenges.
