ETEC Annual Meeting Features Governor Lee, Three Award Presentations

Three recognitions, including two presentations of the prestigious “Muddy Boot Award,” and a speech by Governor Bill Lee highlighted the annual meeting of the East Tennessee Economic Council (ETEC). Held on Thursday morning in the banquet facilities at the Hilton Knoxville Airport hotel, the event drew close to 400 people who heard the Governor talk about the importance of economic development initiatives that change the lives and livelihoods of Tennesseans.

More than 200 people turned out yesterday for the “Nuclear Opportunities Workshop” organized by the East Tennessee Economic Council with sponsorship support from a number of organizations that have a stake in the region’s long-standing place in the sector and the nuclear renaissance that is occurring.

NNSA Breaks Ground on Security Project at Y-12

NNSA this week held the groundbreaking of the multiyear Security Infrastructure Revitalization Program at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee. The project will replace a portion of the existing perimeter intrusion detection and assessment system, known as PIDAS, and upgrade other security features.

Y-12 and LLNL Partner to Accelerate Production, Innovation for U.S. Nuclear Deterrent

Y-12 National Security Complex and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have teamed up to rapidly modernize legacy technology and production methods of crucial components for the U.S. nuclear deterrent. A leading example of this collaboration is the recent successful installation and testing of the electron beam cold hearth melter (EBCHM) – a machine that can melt and cast various metals including uranium alloys.

NNSA Releases FY 2022 Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan Report

Today, the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is releasing the Fiscal Year 2022 Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan (FY 2022 SSMP). A New Entry to Y-12’s History

It’s a nondescript yellow brick building just down the hill from the Jack Case Center at the Y 12 National Security Complex. The building could be easily ignored as an inconsequential structure, but looks can be deceiving. Recently, the look improved a bit. Building 9731, known as the Pilot Plant, is Y-12’s oldest structure.

Deactivation Paves Way for Major Skyline Changes in Oak Ridge

Since the start of 2022, EM crews at Oak Ridge have finished deactivating the former Criticality Experiment Laboratory and the mercury-contaminated Column Exchange (COLEX) equipment at the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12). They are among 200 buildings at Y-12 and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) that no longer support ongoing missions. A subset of those buildings comprises DOE’s largest inventory of high-risk excess contaminated facilities that the Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management and its contractor UCOR are responsible for deactivating and demolishing.
