Opportunity to Comment on Kairos Power’s Hermes Project Environmental Impact

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is seeking public input on environmental issues pertaining to Kairos Power’s construction permit application for the Hermes low-power demonstration reactor to be built at the Heritage Center site in East Tennessee Technology Park. ETEC is pleased to have Kairos Power as a member and we would encourage anyone with an interest in this project to participate.

Smithsonian Exhibit Honors ORNL’s Amy Elliott with Life-Sized Statue Recognizing Women in STEM

Oak Ridge National Laboratory scientist Amy Elliott is one of 120 women featured in a new exhibit, IfThenSheCan, at the Smithsonian to commemorate Women’s History Month. A life-size 3D printed statue of Elliott, a manufacturing scientist, is now on display in the Smithsonian Castle in Washington, D.C., through March 27. The statues recognize women who have excelled in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, and is the largest collection of women statues ever assembled.

Clinch River Nuclear Site – Draft PEIS Public Comment Period Open

TVA has published the Clinch River Nuclear Site Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technology Park Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (CRN PEIS). A Notice of Availability was published in the Federal Register. The Draft PEIS and online comment form are available on TVA’s website.

Input Sought for Test Reactor Environmental Review

NRC staff will seek public views on environmental issues the agency should consider in reviewing Kairos Power’s application for a construction permit to build the “Hermes” test reactor at a site in Oak Ridge. NRC staff will consider written comments regarding environmental topics until April 19. The staff will hold a meeting on March 23, to discuss the safety and environmental review processes and take comments. Meeting details will be available by March 11 on the NRC’s public meeting calendar or the agency webpage on the Kairos application.

ORNL experts help measure new world record for fusion energy

A new fusion record was announced Feb. 9 in the United Kingdom: At the Joint European Torus, or JET, researchers from the EUROfusion consortium documented the generation of 59 megajoules of sustained fusion energy, more than doubling the previous 1997 record.

The Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development were recognized by the Federal Laboratory Consortium for their impactful partnership that resulted in a record $2.3 billion investment by Ultium Cells.
