National Academies Panel: Time Is Right For U.S. To Build Pilot Fusion Plant
The U. S. government should build a 50-megawatt fusion power plant to demonstrate the technology, according to the authors of a report released by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Now is the time, the scientists say, because of the convergence of recent technological developments.

PNNL Deputy Associate Director to Lead ORNL Isotopes Directorate
Balendra Sutharshan, deputy associate laboratory director for operational systems at the DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, has joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory as associate laboratory director for the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate, or ISED.

Y-12's Introduce a Girl to Engineering Virtual Event
The Y-12 National Security Complex will take the Introduce a Girl to Engineering event virtual this year to introduce students about careers in engineering. Through a series of E-Talks, girls in East Tennessee can watch pre-recorded videos with Y-12 employees explaining their day-to-day and answering questions.

AMSE Celebrates Black History Month, Creates Video
This week the American Museum of Science and Energy celebrated Black History Month by posting a video of 55-year veteran of the DOE community Harold Conner Jr., along with UCOR’s Sonya Johnson and Marty Lowe, President of MSi Workforce Solutions. Connor discusses growing up in the 1950s, and being the only Black student in his engineering school.

Former Radioisotope Dev. Lab Demo Underway at ORNL
DOE’s OREM and contractor UCOR have begun removing the two remaining structures at the former Radioisotope Development Lab at ORNL. Known as “hot cells,” the structures being demolished are heavily shielded concrete rooms that provided researchers protection from highly radioactive material during the years the laboratory was operational.

Y-12 Builds Storm Shelter at ETTP Facility
Did you know that some Y‑12 employees work at East Tennessee Technology Park? The Material Acquisition and Control Center, or MAC, is located at the former K‑25 site and provides a state‑of‑the‑art supply chain management option to Y‑12 and Pantex. These buildings, one with 48,000 square feet of storage space and one with 38,000 square feet, are similar to large commercial fulfillment centers.
