TVA / Framatome to Load 3D-Printed Fuel Assembly Bracket in Commercial Reactor
TVA will load four new 3D-printed fuel assembly brackets at its Browns Ferry nuclear power plant next spring. The components were recently manufactured at ORNL in a joint project with TVA and Framatome, as part of the Transformational Challenge Reactor program.

NASA’s Plutonium Tours U.S. Before Heading to Mars
The plutonium-238 that powers NASA’s rovers on Mars crisscrosses the U.S. on a tour of national labs. DOE officials outlined the path and process of manufacturing the Pu-238 for the Perseverance Rover that launched in July and is already about two-thirds of the way to the Red Planet.

EM Employs Drone Technology for Safer Inspections
In October, OREM used a drone to conduct visual inspections inside and outside ORNL's 3039 stack. The chimney-like structure, built in 1950, requires periodic inspections to evaluate its structural integrity.

The University of Tennessee has joined a new institute aimed at stopping disruptions: the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute, a $111-million, US DOE-backed, public-private partnership led by the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Reuse of Cleanup Equipment in Oak Ridge Saves Millions
Reuse of transport platforms — large elevator-like devices installed outside facilities that allow workers to access multiple floors — among EM cleanup projects in Oak Ridge will save nearly $3.5 million. The platforms were installed at Y-12’s Biology Complex to support deactivation activities.

ORNL Joins Effort to Make Plastic More Recyclable
While some plastics are recyclable, only 8.4% nationally in 2017, according to the EPA, are recycled. To help address this issue, researchers at DOE's ORNL are joining the Bio-Optimized Technologies to keep Thermoplastics out of Landfills and the Environment, or BOTTLE, Consortium.

Two Senior Officials Retire from DOE's NNSA
|
Geoffrey Beausoleil will retire in April as the local federal official for the NNSA production office. Steve Erhart, a former policy manager in the office of the NNSA administrator, and briefly acting administrator himself in 2018, is also leaving federal service.
