3 Win Nobel in Chemistry for Work on Lithium-Ion Batteries

Three scientists won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work developing lithium-ion batteries, which have reshaped energy storage and transformed cars, mobile phones and many other devices — and reduced the world’s reliance on fossil fuels that contribute to global warming. The prize went to John B. Goodenough, 97, a German-born engineering professor at the University of Texas; M. Stanley Whittingham, 77, a British-American chemistry professor at the State University of New York at Binghamton; and Japan’s Akira Yoshino, 71, of Asahi Kasei Corporation and Meijo University.

Marcy Kaptur Kicks Off Jobs Week Spotlight on Nuclear Security

A Toledo-area congressman and a senior government official want to get the word out about jobs that could become available in America’s nuclear weapon production and oversight programs. U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) was joined at the Univ. of Toledo by NNSA head Lisa Gordon-Hagerty, who helps oversee the development and maintenance of the nation’s nuclear weapons arsenal. Their message: With 40% of NNSA’s work force eligible for retirement, the agency is looking to hire 7,000 people a year for the foreseeable future to keep up its national work force of 42,000 people.

Government AI Strategy Includes Tech Transfer to Private Sector

DOE's first chief commercialization officer, Conner Prochaska, says the U.S. is positioned to win the AI technology race. As director of the DOE's Office of Technology Transitions, Prochaska oversees, among other things, the commercialization of projects related to government AI strategy. In this Q&A, Prochaska talks about government AI strategy and how basic science evolves into commercial products. He reflects on the U.S. rivalry with China over AI, and how he sees the government AI strategy as embodying democratic values.

Southern Research to Develop Robots for Nuclear Reactors

DOE has awarded a team led by Southern Research a $2.8 million grant to develop smart maintenance robots that will work autonomously in the challenging conditions inside next-generation nuclear reactors. The team working on the project, funded by DOE’s ARPA-E, will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to train the robots to complete maintenance tasks at a future molten salt reactor large component test facility.

Puerto Rico to Begin Nuclear Feasibility Study

The Nuclear Alternative Project, founded in 2016 by Puerto Rican engineers in the U.S. nuclear industry to inform and advocate for SMRs and microreactors in Puerto Rico, proposed the study to the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, to evaluate the economic, safety and social impact of deploying microreactors and SMRs for the island. It will officially begin the study, having received receipt of a "notice to proceed" from DOE's Idaho National Laboratory.

TN Promise Needs 9,000 Mentors for Class of 2020

tnAchieves is almost halfway to the goal of recruiting 9,000 volunteer mentors. Their intent is to provide every TN Promise applicant from the Class of 2020 with a local support system.
The time commitment is small but the impact can be life-changing for students.
The organization provides a one-hour training session, a handbook, and weekly communication to ensure the mentor is fully equipped to serve his/her students.
