Bill Gates’ Nuclear Venture Teams to Make Coal-Based Carbon Fiber

TerraPower, the venture that’s working on next-generation nuclear reactors with backing from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, is now working on next-generation uses for coal as well. The privately held company, based in Bellevue, is part of a team that’s receiving more than $1 million in federal funding to develop an emissions-free process to produce carbon fiber from coal.

Finding a Radioactive Needle in a Haystack

A mock explosion near a hypothetical major sporting event in Las Vegas set the scene for an exercise in which the IAEA tested the adaptability of its multinational Response and Assistance Network, RANET, whose members deliver expertise and specialized equipment to assist in a response to nuclear and radiological emergencies. In the exercise scenario, the request was to locate and recover any radioactive sources in a stadium and athlete’s village before a major sporting event.

The Arrow of Time is a theory from physicist Arthur Eddington describing how time moves forward and what will change. And we can say with confidence that humanity and America are at a special point in time, due to where we are on the prospects for innovation across a wide set of areas. One critical area of innovation is in quantum information technologies. Late last month, Google announced it achieved Quantum Supremacy in computing.

ORNL Receives Five 2019 R&D 100 Awards

Researchers at DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory received five 2019 R&D 100 Awards, increasing the lab’s total to 221 since the award’s inception in 1963. The awards recognize the top 100 revolutionary technologies of the year, as well as the scientists and engineers who created them. Winners will be honored at the 57th annual R&D 100 Conference on December 5.

CNS Creates Rakes for Volunteers to Use in Friendship Bell Garden

Volunteers who are designing and maintaining the new Japanese dry landscape garden at the International Friendship Bell Peace Pavilion received special rakes for the garden from CNS, the contractor for the Y-12 National Security Complex. The rakes feature stainless steel blades, made by craftspeople at Y-12 especially for the karesansui garden.

Biology Complex Deactivation Advances

EM crews are making significant progress removing asbestos and other hazardous waste from the Biology Complex at the Y-12 National Security Complex, a deactivation project that’s more than 60%t complete. EM crews are preparing the six-story 9207 Facility at Oak Ridge's Biology Complex for demolition. The building spans more than 256,600 square feet.
