The 2019 Nuclear Suppliers Workshop is focused on supply opportunities for advanced nuclear reactors, nuclear fuels, additive manufacturing for nuclear, and nuclear medicine.

NEW THIS YEAR!

  • The 2019 event begins with an opening reception on the evening of Monday, August 26, at Calhoun’s on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge.
  • Attendees will have opportunities to attend breakout session(s) for a more informal dialogue with industry representatives.
  • Opportunity to tour Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility to see advances in additive manufacturing and how those are being applied to future nuclear applications.

ETEC Awards: Call for Nominations

ETEC is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Muddy Boot Award and Postma Young Professional Medal. Submissions should include a letter to the selection committee containing specific reasons for the nomination along with the nominee’s resume and bio. Detailed criteria can be found on the ETEC website. TNominations may be submitted online, by email, or through the mail.

East TN School Could be First Middle School to Send Satellite into Space

East Tennessee’s connection to space exploration is continuing with the next generation. Robertsville students are making progress to become the first middle school in the nation to send a cubesat into space. A cubesat is a miniature satellite used for space research.
Students are in the final stages of progression from using 3-D printed plastic prototypes to working with space-age materials. The Robertsville Rams’ so-called Ramsat will help study regrowth of forests in the Smokies from space.

Rita Baranwal's Vision for the Future of Nuclear Energy

Dr. Rita Baranwal is the new assistant secretary for nuclear energy, making her the first woman to lead this office at U.S. DOE. A strong advocate for nuclear energy, she brings more than 20 years of experience in the nuclear field and takes over a $1.3 billion portfolio to promote the research and development of current and advanced nuclear technologies. One of her top priorities is to have something like a micro-reactor or small modular reactor built by 2025 to show this country and the rest of the world that the U.S. is still a powerhouse in this arena.

ORNL Scientists Make Fundamental Discovery to Creating Better Crops

A team of scientists led by the DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory have discovered the specific gene that controls an important symbiotic relationship between plants and soil fungi, and successfully facilitated the symbiosis in a plant that typically resists it. The discovery could lead to the development of bioenergy and food crops that can withstand harsh growing conditions, resist pathogens and pests, require less chemical fertilizer and produce larger and more plentiful plants per acre.

UCOR Helps Develop Next Generation of Cleanup Workers

DOE Environmental Management’s cleanup contractor at the Oak Ridge Site is helping develop the next generation of workers by leading or collaborating on numerous programs to ensure future cleanup is met with a capable, safety-conscious workforce. UCOR’s comprehensive workforce development approach begins in elementary schools and continues through higher education, technical training, and apprenticeships.

NNSA Awards Cooperative Agreements for Mo-99 Production

DOE/NNSA has completed negotiations for three cooperative agreement awards for the production of molybdenum-99 without the use of highly enriched uranium. Congress appropriated $40 million for these awards in Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 and $20 million in FY 2019 and directed the Department to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement to competitively award cooperative agreements.
